Is Acid Reflux Serious?

Do you suffer from acid reflux and feel that sour discomfort in your stomach and heartburn-like pain? Acid reflux is the back flow of stomach acid into the esophagus. If not treated, it can lead to ulcers, esophageal bleeding, and esophageal cancer. What causes acid reflux? Here are a few culprits:

  • Obesity
  • Eating large meals or eating right before bed
  • Smoking
  • Eating greasy, fatty, fried food
  • For some people, alcohol, carbonated beverages, coffee/tea, chocolate, citrus fruits, garlic, onion, tomato, mint, and spicy food.
  • And STRESS!

The common consensus I hear from my clients who suffer from acid reflux is stress and lifestyle. At first they don’t realize that’s the source of the problem but as we talk, that’s what always seems to unravel. For some people it’s not obvious that this is stress-induced because we don’t necessary feel “stressed out,” but rather it’s simply how we react to our daily stressors. How do you react to stressors in your life?

Also in our fast-paced society, most of us breathe very swallow. Years ago, I was diagnosed with acid reflux and was given medication which I hated taking and it didn’t do much for me. I soon learned that I was not breathing correctly, and worked on deep breathing and my symptoms went away. Of course, our food, beverage, and lifestyle strongly affect these symptoms as well.
