What’s a great health boost for fall? Let’s start with the problem. As the weather gets colder, we go inside more where we share germs and get sick. In addition, some of us are full of stress. Hence, we may experience a lowered immune system, physical symptoms, or more anxiety due to stress. Especially with less sunlight, others may even feel more depressed. How can we intentionally boost our health and thrive?
Solutions for Healthy Boost This Autumn
As the weather cools, it’s time to get back into the woods. Although not a new concept, the Japanese coined the term “forest bathing” or Shirin-Yoku in 1982. This can be done at a park, trail, beach, or any natural setting with your phone off and being present. Statics reveal that by 2050, 66% of us will live in cities so it’s important that we can practice forest bathing daily anywhere outside. Unfortunately, the average American spends 93% of their time indoors. Yikes!
Let’s get outside and use all five senses. All this practice requires is that you use your eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and hands/feet while taking your time. There’s no destination or pressure. Just be present.
Health Benefits of Forest Bathing
What are the benefits of forest bathing? Just 10 – 20 minutes per day can lower blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels. Consequently, we improve happiness and wellness while decreasing stress.
Other benefits also include reduced risks of heart attacks, diabetes, and obesity. Forest bathing improves mood, sleep, energy, soothes sore muscles, and reduces inflammation. To me, this remedy is more appealing than pain, drugs, or doctor appointments.
Counter Illnesses for Fall and the Rest of the Year
Trees release a chemical called phytoncides that boosts our immune system. Beyond that, forest bathing can reduce the risks of cancer, stroke, gastric ulcers, depression, anxiety, and stress. Why not get out in the woods and enjoy a day of purposeless wandering? If it’s known to have such profound effect on both our mind and body, let’s set time aside. I know it’s been super hot where I live so see you in the forest for a health boost this fall.
