Let’s talk about 5 simple steps to a happy, healthy new you. Despite having good intentions to cook, eat nutritious food, lose weight, exercise, and be joyful, many of us just live on autopilot and feel stuck. While we do things that may help, we don’t always stay consistent and/or we let life get in the way. Sit in a tranquil space and ask yourself: “What would I do if I wasn’t afraid?”
We don’t change because we fear failure. What if I put in the work and still don’t lose weight? What if I’m not smart enough, lovable enough, thin enough, and what’s that new life like? Although I’m uncomfortable in my own skin, the unknown seems worst. Use these simple steps to get started and get support.
1. Identify the Obstacles to a Happy, Healthy You
Are there obstacles you know you need to confront but avoid to the point where you make excuses to justify being stuck? Some examples might include cooking more, speaking up to a boss, ending a relationship, etc. We can’t be happy and healthy if there are obstacles in our lives that prohibit us from taking actions toward growth. What are those things in your life?
2. Give Fear an Identity
What are you most afraid of? What triggers the fear, what gives it power, what contributes to it? How has this been getting in the way of you being healthy, happy, and successful? Give your fear a shape.
3. Visualize Your Happy, Healthy Self
If we can toss out societal expectations and other people’s judgments, what would you be doing differently in your life? Make a long list of things you would do, both big and tiny, if you weren’t afraid.
4. Actionable Steps
Once you’re clear and have direction, break it down into tiny actionable steps. Get specific, where and when will these small actions towards health and happiness happen?
5. Celebrate Your Success in Creating a Happy, Healthy New You
Celebrate, celebrate! Most of my clients disregard their wins and focus on all the things they didn’t do. Success builds on success so focus on the wins. Plus, once you see fear as opportunity rather than a hindrance, you will have fewer limitations and healthy habits become easy.
Take these 5 steps to a happy, healthy you and make it sustainable this time. Be present and not on autopilot.
